The KB Senior Guy Style Guide

I’m SO excited about your upcoming senior session with KB Photography and that you are officially one of my #kbseniors!!

Below, you will find information regarding your outfit selection, what to expect at your session, and more. Please read it thoroughly!

Neglecting to read this guide can result in a poor senior portrait experience, and most frequently asked questions are answered right here in this guide.

Your session is going to begin at a pre-determined location based on the vibe you want for your Senior Photos. We will meet there approximately 10 minutes before we plan to start shooting so that I can help you finalize outfit choices! Please try your absolute best to arrive on time, if not a few minutes early.

Keep in mind that your session length is decided when booked and if you are late, the session will still end at the time discussed at booking. If you are more than 30 minutes late to your session, we could have to reschedule for my earliest available date (which could be up to 2-3 months out).

Outfit Tips

Stuck on what to wear? I’m here to help! Here are some of my favorite tips and tricks to help you guide your outfit choices!

Choosing what you will wear for your photo shoot is a huge decision that can make or break your senior portrait session! I know that sounds dramatic... but, if you accidentally wear something that isn’t flattering on camera or something that you don’t feel confident in...it can ruin the experience for you! So, here are some of the best ways to choose what to wear.

1. BE COMFORTABLE

If you do not like fitted clothing (super tight shirts or pieces that fit awkwardly) then leave them at home! Personally, I try to steer clear of items that are fitted in the tummy area (don’t we all?) just because it makes me self- conscious and I’m constantly wondering if it looks bad. So, if there are pieces in your closet that make you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable, don’t include them in your senior portrait wardrobe! Additionally, we will most likely be sitting on the ground, laying down, walking and doing other things that could be difficult if your clothing is uncomfortable!

Be mindful of wrinkles in your clothing and undergarments, too! Extensive editing is not part of my editing flow and will require an additional fee.

2. BE BRIGHT + THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX

On camera, sometimes solid white can make skin tones look very washed out and unflattering, unless it's summertime and you have a nice glowy tan.

I always recommend that my Senior Guys bring at least one solid neutral top; black, blues, and tans typically photograph well, but if you're willing to try to choose colors that POP and that compliment your hair + skin colors, your photos will turn out even better! Primary colors like red, royal blue and yellow photograph beautifully as well as emerald green, bright purples, pinks, oranges and any other colors that really POP!

Sometimes, color combos that may seem odd in-person end up photographing BEAUTIFULLY on camera!

3. ADD LAYERS

Layers are a great way to add texture to your images and are also a fun way to play with mixing formal and casual styles. Many of our clients like to incorporate a blend of everyday styles with one or two formal looks. However, we highly recommend staying true to yourself. If you would never wear a button-down with a tie, for example, then you probably don't want to incorporate that into your senior portraits. Instead, you could try a short-sleeve button-down with a collar or a button-down with rolled sleeves and no tie for a more formal look that doesn't feel forced.

We do suggest avoiding shirts with large graphics or logos on them unless you have a specific reason for including them, such as your jersey for some sports imagery.

4. DON’T FORGET THE SHOES

When prepping your outfits, think head to toe. While there is nothing wrong with wearing the same shoes for your whole session, only do so if they align with all your outfits. If you are mixing casual and formal styles, you will likely need different shoes to pair with each one. Also, keep your session location in mind when packing up your footwear. It can be a good idea to wear shoes you don't mind getting messy to get you to the final spot before slipping on your portrait ready kicks if you are participating in one of our adventure sessions or heading to a potentially muddy location.

One last tip! Don't neglect the nails.

In all of the chaos of senior session prep...don’t forget to pamper your nails! During your shoot, a lot of the poses we do will have your hands close to your face and in the frame, so make sure that your nails look just how you want! Yes, guys, this applies to you, too! Make sure your nails are clean and trimmed before your session.
